Icarus, By Bastille

To start off on my blog, I want to talk about my current favorite song, Icarus. I just recently started listening to Bastille, really. I'm only listening to a few songs of theirs, off of one of their popular albums, Bad Blood. Ah, I'm being sidetracked. ANYWAY.
The song always spiked my interest with the familiar title, and when I looked it up, I remembered that Icarus is actually a Greek legend. The legend was that Icarus and his father, Daedalus, were stuck on Crete. Crete is the island off of Greece. Anyway, so the story is that the father made wings out of wax, and the two escaped the island. Icarus, on the other hand, was so excited, so elated, he flew closer and closer to the sun, and his wings melted. Icarus plummeted to the Earth below, and was never found. It was clear that he had died though.
You may be wondering, what the heck does this have to do with the song?! Well, lemme tell you. The song doesn't have to do with Icarus at all, really. If you look at the lyrics, you would agree.

I interpret this song in a way that some might not. I think that really, this song is talking about just how short our lives are. Although, this isn't a You Only Live Once (YOLO) case. No, this is quite the opposite.

Look who's digging their own grave
That is what they all say
You'll drink yourself to death

In this, it's saying that while you continue to drink and drink, you'll eventually just die, not doing anything with your life but drinking. This song is telling you about how if you're a party animal all your life, being stupid and losing your innocence (Your hands protect the flames / From the wild winds around you), you won't get anything done; you'll always be a party animal. Everything about this song is talking about how bad the YOLO saying is, and how just wasting your life will bring an early grave; not a grave for your life, but for your soul, and personality.

Icarus is flying too close to the sun
Icarus's life, it has only just begun
This is how it feels to take a fall
Icarus is flying towards an early grave
